Rest in peace, Richard Kipling, who gave me my start in journalism at the L.A. Times.
Richard oversaw the newspaper’s Minority Editorial Training Program, which I entered in the fall of 1998. I spent a year in LA and then went on to Newsday, another Times-Mirror newspaper.
He was a force of nature; a great boss; the best cheerleader; a fine wordsmith; and a dedicated friend. He shaped the entire trajectory of my career. Bereft that I won’t be able to share in more moments with him. His legacy will live on in the legions of journalists he helped raise up.
