Richard Kipling is the reason I got to move to LA, live in an apartment in Toluca Lake with a Murphy bed, work at the LA Times, and learn how to love this city and the people who make it. I can’t imagine being where I am without him. He — along with his dearly missed partner in crime Randy Hagihara—helped generations of us young reporters find their footing at the Times, especially those of us in METPRO (the Minority Editorial Training Program). One of Richard’s kids at the memorial service talked about how Richard brought Dad Energy to everything he did — and that’s true. He was always the guy cheering you on as you figured things out, wanting the best for you. May everyone have someone like Richard Kipling in their corner ❤️
